Located in the centre of the northern side of the Japanese archipelago, Toyama is blessed with extremely dynamic natural features. From the 3,000 m peaks of the Tateyama mountain range to the 1,000 m depths of Toyama Bay, the total elevation difference of over 4,000 m exists across just 40 to 50 kilometres of plains.

There are many sights to see in Toyama, including world-renowned mountain scenery along the Tateyamakurobe Alpine Route and the world heritage historic villages of Gokayama. Thanks to its stunning natural beauty and highly-praised local environmental protection initiatives, Toyama Bay was recently inducted as a member of the World's Most Beautiful Bays Club, an organization supported by UNESCO. There is no shortage of cultural events in the city; the Owara Kaze No Bon and Takaoka Mikurumayama festivals are two well-known examples of the rich local traditions, which have been passed down over generations.

In addition to this, Toyama is equidistant from Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, and since the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen in spring 2015, rail travel between Toyama and Tokyo takes just over 2 hours. Accessing Toyama has never been easier, with Toyama Airport providing domestic flights to Tokyo and Sapporo, as well as international services to Seoul, Dalian, Shanghai, and Taipei.

Toyama Prefecture aims to be a place where people can come together to have fun through sport. We are working hard to create an environment in which every resident can find a sport that fits their goals and preferences, while also promoting sports programs which will develop top athletes, capable of competing on the national and international stages.
