Aomori City is located in the centre of Aomori Prefecture. It is the prefectural capital with a population of over 290,000 people.

It has developed since the Edo period as a place of strategic importance, linking Hokkaido and Honshu through transport and logistics. It became a core city for transport, administration and culture in the northern Tohoku region. Aomori, surrounded by the natural beauty of Hakkoda Mountain Range and Mutsu Bay, is blessed with beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons and a rich bounty of apples, blackcurrants, sea cucumbers, and scallops.

Aomori is a charming city with a wealth of cultural and historical treasures that can only be found here, such as Aomori Nebuta Festival, one of the representative five festivals of Japan and Sannai Maruyama Site, a Jomon archeological site which is aiming to be added to the list of World Heritage Sites.

Aomori is a city filled with nature and surrounded by a combination, rarely seen in Japan, of the sea and mountains, with Mutsu Bay to the north and Hakkoda Mountains to the South. Aomori is also a city full of tradition that boasts Sannai Maruyama Site and Komakino Site, which preserve the history of the Jomon people.

This city offers many benefits, and its citizens have fostered unique cultural arts overflowing with creativity, including the world-famous Nebuta Festival, woodblock prints, and Tsugaru shamisen.

We hope that you enjoy this vibrant and exciting northern city, as well as its seasonal flavours and traditional skills, and its history and culture that are closely linked to the changes throughout the four seasons.
