Susono is a city located at the foot of Mt. Fuji, where you can see classic Japanese view of the mountain. Various industries has flourished in Susono, including global companies such as Toyota Motor Corporation and Canon. This city has good access to transportation such as Tomei Expressway. Also, the climate is warm and the nature surrounded by mountain and the industry are harmonized.
Shizuoka Prefecture is famous for its strawberries, but Susono's strawberries are particularly sweet. Other local specialties include Japanese yams, molokheiya and bamboo shoots. Susono is also known for its "Susono sui-gyoza"(dumplings), which are made from molokheiya.
The spring-like climate is loved by local residents, and tourists also come to experience the natural beauty of the Suyama Sengen-jinja Shrine, the world heritage site of Mt. Fuji, Mt. Fuji Natural Recreation Forest, and the Fukarayousui irrigation canal. The canal dates back to around 1670, and took three-and-a-half years to complete. It was included in the ICID Register of Heritage Irrigation Structures in 2014.
In terms of sports, rugby and association football are popular. The 58th National Sports Festival Junior Rugby Competition was held here in 2003. The WOMEN'S SEVENS 2016, a women's rugby sevens series, was also held here. Susono is now gearing up for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. As for association football, the Uruguay National Team held its training camp here during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Currently, JFA Academy FUKUSHIMA, an organisation raising future players to represent Japan, is training in Susono.
