Okuizumo-cho (an administrative municipal town), which was established in March 2007 through merging Nita-cho and Yokota-cho, is located in the southeast of Shimane Prefecture. The town sits at the source of the mythological Hii River, and is adjacent to the Tottori and Hiroshima Prefectures.

Okuizumo is known for the following:

Town sport: hockey

Hockey has been Okuizumo's main sport since 1982, when Kokutai (the National Sports Festival) was held in Shimane Prefecture. Since then, many of Okuizumo's best players have attained professional and Olympic levels.

Traditional culture: Japanese sword making

The symbol of ancient warriors, or Samurai, is the traditional Japanese sword. These swords are made from Tamahagane, using the ancient iron making process, Tatara. Okuizumo is the only place in the world where still uses this method, which has been passed down through the generations.

Japanese rice brand: Nita-mai

Nita-mai is one of the most famous rice brands in Japan. The range of temperature in the mountain area makes it possible to cultivate high quality rice.

Nationally appointed natural treasure: Oni-no-Shitaburui

According to a legend, the unrequited love story between Tama Hime and a great shark led to the creation of Oni-no-Shitaburui. Today, many people visit to enjoy the fresh air, unique rock formations, and picturesque scenery.

Onsen: Skin beautifying hot springs

Okuizumo has three onsen known as the Bihada Onsen Kyou (Skin Beautifying Hot Spring Village). These onsen are famous for their alkaline rich waters, which not only make you relax, but also provide multiple skin benefits.
