Kitakyshu City is located in the west of Japan, and is the northernmost city of the Kyushu region. It is situated conveniently close to many rapidly developing East Asian countries. With views over the Sea of Japan and the Seto Inland Sea, and with forty percent of the city's area comprised of rich forest, it is a city blessed with an abundance of nature. One of twenty ordinance-designated cities within Japan, it was established in 1963, when five separate towns merged to form one single city. One of the four main industrial areas of Japan, Kitakyushu City has made great contributions towards the modernization of Japanese industry.

Making the most of its advantageous geographical location, Kitakyshu City has become a bustling city of over one million citizens and a hub for industry, logistics, and commerce. It was the first city in the Asia region to be recognized as a Green Growth Model City by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Furthermore, in recent years, the city has become a hotspot for eco-businesses such as the Kitakyushu Eco Town project.

Kitakyushu City's many notable attractions include Kokura Castle, the port town of Mojiko Retro, the Hiraodai Limestone Plateau (one of the three major karst plateaus of Japan), and the leisure facilities. In response to its wide variety of tourism-related amenities, more than ten million tourists visit the city every year and further efforts are being made towards improving and promoting these attractions.

Kitakyushu City also has a vast menu of appetizing dishes, such as Kokura beef, and Yaki-udon, as well as many other delicacies harvested from the mountains and sea.
