Kurume City is located in the northern part of Kyushu. The Chikugo River, the longest river in Kyushu Island, runs from northeast to west through Kurume City. In the eastern part of the city, the Minou mountain range rises up steeply like a screen. The broad, fertile Chikugo plains provide much beautiful natural scenery.

Kurume City, with a population of more than 300,000 people, is the only core city in Kyushu that is not a prefectural capital. Kurume is a city of advanced medical services, with one of the highest ratios of doctors and medical institutions in Japan. Furthermore, biotechnology industries such as leading-edge research into cancer vaccines are highly advanced in Kurume.

Kurume boasts one of the highest levels of agricultural production in Japan, with the largest output in Fukuoka Prefecture.

Kurume also boasts various seasonal festivals and events including one of Japan's three biggest fire festivals, Oniyo (ogre night) at Daizenji Tamataregu Shrine; the Chikugo River Fireworks Display with 18,000 fireworks, one of the largest in western Japan; and one of Japan's three biggest marches (walking festivals), the Kurume Azalea March.

Nature's gifts from the rivers and plains have fostered a rich food culture in Kurume. There is a huge variety, represented by high quality rice wine-with the area known as one of Japan's three major production areas of sake-and traditional local cuisine such as eel or etsu (Japanese coilia). There are also famous dishes categorised as *Class B Gourmet including Kurume ramen (noodles), Kurume yakitori (barbecued chicken) and Chikugo udon (noodles).

Class B Gourmet --------Delicious and inexpensive dishes, frequently served in generous portions
