Kumamoto Prefecture is located in the centre of the island of Kyushu, southwestern Japan, and has played an important role throughout history as a hub of the government, culture, transportation and economy of Kyushu.

Aso Kumamoto Airport has direct flights to the main international airports in Japan, and it takes one hour and forty-five minutes from Tokyo to Kumamoto. In addition, there are direct flights to Seoul (Incheon), Kaohsiung in Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Aso is one of the world's largest volcanic calderas. The Aso area is registered as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System and as a Global Geopark, making Aso famous throughout the world. The views that change with seasons keep attracting many people.

Kumamoto Castle is one of the three premier castles in Japan. The Omotenashi Bushotai (samurai) will welcome you there!

Furthermore, Kumamoto has many spring water spots, which cover all water usage of the citizens of Kumamoto City and the surrounding metropolitan areas. In 2013, Kumamoto City received the "Water for Life" Award, from the United Nations. Kumamoto is also known as the "Kingdom of Hot Springs." You can enjoy the various smells, colours, and beneficial effects of its water.

Kumamoto has an abundance of nature, and its agriculture, forestry, and fishery products truly thrive thanks to its great ground water. By grace of a fertile land, there are great seafood, rice, vegetables, fruit and other delicious foods in Kumamoto.

In regard to sports, there are many good sports facilities, accommodations, and medical facilities. Every year, many sports teams and professional association football teams from Japan and abroad have training camps here.

In 2019, a year before the Tokyo 2020 Games, two world tournaments, the Women's Handball World Championship and the Rugby World Cup, will take place in Kumamoto.
