Tome City is located in the northeast of Miyagi Prefecture.The northern part of Tome City lies next to Iwate Prefecture, and its western part is adjacent to Kurihara City.

The southern part lies next to Ishinomaki City and Wakuya, while the eastern part is adjacent to Minamisanriku. Tome City is the fifth largest area, 536.12 km2, and accounts for 7.36% of the whole of Miyagi Prefecture.

It is 70 km, as the crow flies, from Hasama, which is the center of Tome City, to Sendai City. It is 25 km to Osaki City, 30 km to Ishinomaki City, and 30 km to Ichinoseki City.

The western side of Tome City is hilly, and the eastern and northern sides are mountainous, while the centre of Tome City is a huge and fertile plain.

Tome City is one of the leading producers of environmentally friendly rice in Miyagi Prefecture and the Hitomebore and Sasanishiki brands produced there are well known in Japan. The city is also famous for beef.

Tome City has two rivers. The Hasama River flows through the centre of the city, while the other river, known as Kitakami, flows through the east. Water is used for Tome's agriculture and water supply.

In addition, Tome City is called the "Water Village" because it has many rivers and swamps.The Naganuma Rowing Course lies in Tome City, as well as the Kabukurinuma and Byoudounuma marshes, while the Izunuma and Uchinuma wetland areas are considered to be important wetlands according to the Ramsar Convention.

The climate of Tome City is typical of that of an inland. The annual average temperature in Tome City is 11.7 degrees, and the annual precipitation is 1,020mm. There is generally little snowfall over a relatively short period.
