The City of Tsuruoka, as a former castle town of the Shonai Domain located in the southern part of Shonai region in Yamagata Prefecture, has been taking strong leadership in the industrial, economic, and social development of the region since the Meiji Restoration.
Inaugurated newly as "Tsuruoka" in October 2005, as a result of the merger of six surrounding municipalities, the city now has the second largest population within Yamagata Prefecture and the largest area of any municipality within Tohoku region.
With its long history as a castle city, and characterised by its citizen's ethos, Tsuruoka has accumulated the wisdom and technology of our ancestors, developed through their untiring efforts, and has formed a highly sophisticated cultural city along with the industries, the traditions, and the lifestyles of which we are so proud. The abundant nature of the region, varying through the four seasons, has promoted not only the development of agriculture, forestry, and fishery industries but also cultural diversification, providing residents with enormous benefits.
Tsuruoka's gastronomy is highly evaluated for its abundance of natural ingredients and recipes handed down over the generations. In December 2014, Tsuruoka was designed as the City of Gastronomy by UNESCO.
