Murayama City is located in Yamagata Prefecture, in the central part of Japan's northeastern Tohoku region. It is a city with great and beautiful scenery surrounded by lush mountains to the east and west, with the Mogami River runs through the centre.
During the Edo Period and the Meiji Era, the Mogami River was mostly used for boat transportation. Safflower, a speciality used in Yamagata Prefecture as an ingredient of lipstick, dyes, and dyed goods was first carried down the Mogami River to Sakata Port, then to Kyoto, and finally to the capital of Japan. Through this trade, a variety of cultures spread throughout our region.
Murayama enjoys a living culture and history, and is blessed with abundant nature. The city could be called "Japan's hometown."
