Location

Maebashi is located in the southern central part of Gunma Prefecture, about 100 km northwest from Tokyo. The flatland of the Kanto Plain, located at a height of about 100 m above sea level, extends through the central and southern part of the city. The Tone River also flows through the city, which stretches out over the two riversides with a total area of 311.64 km2. The City Hall is located at the following coordinates: 36.23'22.2" N and 139.3'48.3" E.

Weather

Surrounded by Mount Akagi on its northwestern side, and the Joetsu Mountain Range, Maebashi is characterised by an inland climate and low-frequency precipitation. The average temperature is 15 degrees Celsius, but we have a remarkable seasonal change that is due to the large temperature difference between winter and summer. The winds blowing from the southeast from June to August usually bring high temperatures and strong lightning often occurs in summer, but throughout the year our city is proudly blessed with a very high number of hours of sunshine.

Landscape, nature and culture

1) An outstanding medical environment

Our city's medical environment continues to steadily improve, and this is proved, in particular, by the high number of doctors and hospitals located here. The number of doctors per 100,000 citizens greatly exceeds the national average.

2) A city with well-developed disaster resilience

Featuring abundant rain and lightning in summer and the karakkaze, a cold dry wind, in winter, our city is located on solid ground and has developed a strong resilience against all kinds of natural disasters, such as earthquakes and typhoons.

Sightseeing: a city surrounded by rich nature

Maebashi is surrounded by magnificent nature displaying a variety of beautiful vistas in each season. Some examples include the luxuriant greenery of the Mount Akagi area, as well as the Tone River and the Hirose River, which quietly flow through the city.
