Gifu Prefecture is situated in the centre of Japan. It is conveniently located in relation to Tokyo and Osaka, taking 1-2 hours by bullet train, and 1 hour to get to the Chubu Centrair International Airport by express train.

Gifu is home to excellent sports facilities. These include the Hida Ontake Highland Training Area, which boasts the best high altitude training facilities in Japan with four different areas at an elevation of 1,200-2,200 metres. The Hida Ontake Highland Training Area has been praised by the Athletics Federations of various countries and is achieving international recognition as a mecca of sports. Gifu is striving to promote sports with the aim of creating an active prefecture by involving the entire community. Gifu also aims to build relationships with people all around the world, including the national teams of other countries towards the Tokyo 2020.

A wide variety of magnificent nature vistas attract many visitors to Gifu Prefecture. The prefecture has 3000-metre high mountains in the north, and vast plains filled with pristine streams and rivers, such as Kisosansen, in the south.

Gifu is also home to famous cultural assets. It has Shirakawa-go, which boasts thatched-roofed houses and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Honminoshi and the "Float Festivals" of Takayama, Furukawa and Ogaki, which are listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage; and the Ayu of the Nagara River system, which has been designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.

Moreover, Gifu has a large number of tourist attractions, including the Sekigahara Battlefield where the battle that changed the course of Japanese history took place, as well as the well-known Gero hot springs, and local amateur "ji-kabuki". While in Gifu, it is also possible to enjoy a wide variety of fresh local cuisine, ranging from Hida beef to ayu sweet fish, mashed chestnuts, and fuyu persimmons.
