Sports facility

The training venues listed in this online guide (for the following sports) meet the requirements of the National Federation (NF) of each sport, as listed below.

Archery

  • The outdoor lawn area has a 70 meter range, and the targets are facing to the north.
  • The total length is over 150 meters, including the backup space, and the distance from the targets to the back wall is over 20 meters.
  • The interval between each target is over 5 meters (over 6 meters -interval for the Paralympics).

Athletics

  • The athletics stadium is a Category 1 to 4 facility, certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF).

Swimming

  • The pool is certified by the Japan Swimming Federation (JSF), and meets international and general Japanese standards (AA).
  • The lanes for swimming races are 50 meters long, and each lane is 2.5 meters wide.
  • The pool dimensions for synchronized swimming are 50 meters X 25 meters, and the water depth is over 2.5 meters.
  • The distance between the water polo goal lines is 30 meters X 20 meters (25 meters X 20 meters for women), and the water depth is over 2.0 meters.
  • The diving platform heights are 3 meters, 5 meters, 7.5 meters, and 10 meters, and the pool also has a water spout and wave-making facilities.

Badminton

  • The singles court is 13.40 meters long X 5.18 meters wide, and the doubles court is 13.40 meters long X 6.10 meters wide.
  • The floor is a flexible wooden surface with springs (wheelchairs can be used on the floor for the Paralympics).
  • The unobstructed ceiling height is over 12 meters.

Basketball

  • The courts are over 32 meters long X over 19 meters wide in total, and there are more than 2 courts of 28 meters long X 15 meters wide available for field of play.
  • The floor is a flexible wooden surface.
  • The unobstructed ceiling height is over 7 meters.

Boccia

  • The courts are 14.5 meters (or 16.5 meters) long X 8 meters (or 10 meters) wide in total.
  • The floor surface is made from wood.

Boxing

  • The indoor floor area is over 40 meters long X over 30 meters wide.
  • The floor area can hold up to 4 square rings measuring 4.9 meters (smallest) to 6.1 meters inside the rope.

Canoe-Kayak

  • The sprint course has a total length of over 1,000 meters and total width of over 50 meters, and the water depth throughout the course is over 2 meters.
  • The slalom course has a total length of over 200 to 400 meters, and has both natural and artificial obstructions placed throughout it.
  • The para-canoe course has the same specifications as the sprint course.

Cycling

  • The road-race course has a breadth of over 6 meters, and is a roadway with light traffic and only a few traffic signals.
  • The track-race course has a perimeter of 250 meters, and a breadth of over 7 meters.
  • The BMX course has a perimeter of 300 to 400 meters, and a breadth of over 5 meters.
  • The mountain bike course has a length of 4 to 6 kilometers, and features a range of terrain including road sections and fields.

Equestrian

  • The show jumping ground is a 80 meters X 100 meters space for holding competitions.
  • The dressage is made of white materials 30cm in height, and allows for setting up riding grounds of 60 meters long X 20 meters wide in total.
  • The eventing course is an approximately 5,000-meter cross country course, including 1,000 meters of straight-line galloping.

Fencing

  • The floor is a level wooden surface.
  • The area measuring 18 meters long x 5 meters wide in total can hold a piste (3.5 meters long X 2.5 meters wide for the Paralympics).

Football

  • The area can hold 2 or more high-quality natural grass fields, each measuring 108 meters long x 71 meters wide in total.
  • The fields are equipped with drainage facilities to allow practice during wet weather as well.
  • The pitch is 105 meters long x 68 meters wide, and a 1.5-meters grass area in each four directions can be secured outside the pitch.

Football 5-a-side

  • The field is 44-to-46 meters long x 24-to-26 meters wide in total.
  • The pitch is 40-to-42 meters long x 20-to-22 meters wide, with a depth of 2 meters each way and 2 meters each side.
  • The lawn is long-pile artificial grass.

Gymnastics

  • The area for artistic gymnastics can be equipped with apparatus, mats, supplementary mats, safety mats and other equipment of International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) standards.
  • The area for rhythmic gymnastics can be equipped with mats and other equipment of International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) standards.
  • The area for trampoline gymnastics can be equipped with apparatus, mats, supplementary mats, safety mats and other equipment of International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) standards.

Goalball

  • The gymnasium interior space is over 30 meters long x 20 meters wide (600㎡) in total.
  • The unobstructed ceiling height from the floor to the ceiling is over 5 meters.
  • The floors are synthetic, wooden or plastic.

Golf

  • The total length of the more than 18-hole course is 6,800- to-over-7,000 yards for men, and 6,300-to- 6,600 yards for women.
  • The driving range distance is 250-to- 300 yards.
  • There is at least 1 putting green practice area for use (with an approach and bunker).

Handball

  • The competition court is 40 meters long x 20 meters wide, with a depth of 2 meters each way and 1 meter each side (44 meters long x 22 meters wide in total).
  • The unobstructed ceiling height from the floor to the ceiling is over 7 meters.
  • The floor is laid with artificial mats, in accordance with International Handball Federation (IHF) specifications.

Hockey

  • The global standard (water based) pitch is certified by the Japan Hockey Association (JHA).
  • The competition field is 91.4 meters long x 55 meters wide, with a depth of 3-to-5 meters each way and 2-to-4 meters each side.
  • The pitch permeability is ≧150㎜/hour.

Judo

  • The tatami mats are already laid out, or can be laid out as required.
  • The facility can be equipped with enough tatami mats to fill the maximum area, as required.

Powerlifting

  • Each bench is 2.1 meters long x 0.305-to-0.61 meters wide (0.705 meters from the head).
  • Each bench is 0.48-to-0.5 meters high.
  • Each bench is equipped with an IPC Powerlifting certified 250 kg plate.

Modern pentathlon

  • The combined event consists of an 800-meters circuit running course, and an indoor or outdoor shooting range in which the target does not receive the direct sunlight.
  • There is an indoor facility for fencing, with more than two piste (14 meters long x 1.5-to-2 meters wide) available.
  • The long swimming course is 50 meters long x over 21 meters wide with a water depth of 1.8 meters, while the short swimming course is 25 meters long.
  • The equestrian grass field is over 50 meters long x 50 meters wide, with a 350-to-400 meters long course.

Rowing

  • The course is certified by the Japan Rowing Association (JRA), with a gentle flow rate in static and even flowing water.
  • Pontoons (piers for berthing or floating barges) can be permanently set up during the camp period.

Rugby

  • The field of play is 94-to-100 meters long x 68-to-70 meters wide.
  • The field surface is either natural grass, soil, sand or artificial grass (World Rugby approved).
  • There is also an indoor training area (gymnasium, etc.) for private training or training during heavy weather.

Wheelchair rugby

  • The court is 34 meters long x 21.1 meters wide in total (the competition court is 28 meters long x 15 meters wide).
  • The unobstructed ceiling height is over 7 meters.
  • The floor is wooden.

Sailing

  • The facility can be used as a general harbor and a stable pontoon (pier) is set up.
  • There are over 3 competitive sea level areas: 1 x 1,112 meters in diameter, 1 x 1,852 meters in diameter, 1 x 2,964 meters in diameter.
  • A crane for use by disabled persons will be attached to the pontoon during the Paralympics.

Shooting

  • For rifle shooting, there is a shooting range designated by the Public Safety Commission for shooting 50-meters rifles/pistols, 25-meters pistols, and 10-meters air rifles/air pistols.
  • For clay target shooting, there are at least 2 trap and skeet shooting ranges each. The trap shooting range is certified by the Japan Clay Target Shooting Association, and can hold double trap competitions.

Table tennis

  • The area for each table tennis table is 16 meters long x 9 meters wide in total (the competition area is 14 meters long x 7 meters wide).
  • The unobstructed ceiling height is over 5 meters, and the lighting is over 5 meters from the floor area.
  • The floor is wooden, or made from synthetic materials (sports floor) permitted by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), which are laid over the wooden floor.
  • The table tennis tables for disabled persons in wheelchairs are used for the Paralympics.

Taekwondo

  • Each practice area is 12 meters long x 12 meters wide in total
  • The mats are flat and made from non-elastic materials that allow for easy slipping.
  • Each practice area has a punching bag practice area (for kicking) that is 10 meters long x 5 meters wide.

Tennis

  • Each hard court is over 36.57 meters long x 18.29 meters wide in total.
  • The singles court is 23.77 meters long x 8.23 meters wide, and the doubles court is 23.77 meters long x 10.97 meters wide.
  • For the indoor courts, the ceiling height is 12.19 meters from above the net, and the area behind the courts is over 9.14 meters.

Triathlon

  • For swimming, there are indoor and outdoor short course (25 meters) and long course (50 meters) pools, and open waters (ocean, rivers and ponds, etc.)
  • For bicycle and long distance events, there are roadways with light traffic, and also an indoor bicycle space with a roller platform.

Volleyball (indoor)

  • The court is 34 meters long x 19 meters wide in total (the competition court is 18 meters long x 9 meters wide).
  • The unobstructed ceiling height is over 7 meters.
  • The underfloor is made of wood, and the floor is made of vinyl chloride and elastic materials.

Volleyball (beach)

  • There are at least 2 competition courts that are each 16 meters long x 8 meters wide (the total area of 2 courts is 28 meters long x 34 meters wide).
  • The flat and uniform sand surface (ground) is over 40cm deep.
  • There are no obstructions for at least 7 meters from the surface level.

Sitting volleyball

  • The courts are each 22 meters long x 18 meters wide in total (the competition court is 10 meters long x 6 meters wide).
  • There are both rubber courts and tiles courts available.
  • The unobstructed ceiling height is over 7 meters.

Weightlifting

  • There is at least 1 platform (3 meters long x 2.5 or 3 meters wide) for every 2 athletes.
  • The ceiling is high enough to allow the athletes to safely lift up the barbells without feeling like they are in a closed space.
  • The floor is in the deepest basement room and strong enough to withstand the weight of a falling barbell.

Wrestling

  • Each mat is 12 meters long x 12 meters wide, consisting of a center circle (including a 9meters-in-diameter circle and 7 meters-in-diameter concentric circles) and a 1.5 meters adjunct area (protection area).
