Centrally located on the northern side of the Japanese archipelago, Toyama is blessed with extremely dynamic natural features. From the 3,000-meter peaks of the Tateyama Mountain Range to the 1,000-meter depths of Toyama Bay, the total elevation difference of over 4,000 meters is spanned across only 40 to 50 km of plains. Thanks to its bountiful natural environment, Toyama is a treasure trove of traditional mountain cooking and fresh, delicious seafood. Toyama Bay’s fishing grounds are very close to the port, ensuring that the catch arrives fresh; Toyama Bay is often called a “natural fish tank”. Bringing you the best of the seasonal fish caught exclusively in the bay, “Toyama Bay Sushi” is particularly popular.
There are plenty of sights to see in Toyama, including world-renowned mountain scenery along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and the World Heritage Historic Villages of Gokayama. Thanks to its stunning natural beauty and highly-praised local environmental protection initiatives, Toyama Bay was recently inducted as a member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World, an organization supported by UNESCO. There is also no shortage of cultural events in Toyama; the Owara Kaze no Bon and Takaoka Mikurumayama festivals are two well-known examples of the rich local traditions which have been passed down over generations.
In addition to this, Toyama is equidistant from Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, and since the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen in spring of 2015, travel between Toyama and Tokyo takes only 2 hrs. 8 min. Accessing Toyama has never been easier, with Toyama Airport providing domestic flights to Tokyo and Sapporo, as well as international service to Seoul, Dalian, Shanghai, and Taipei.
